As a co-founder of one of the most prominent venture capital firms in Silicon Valley, Marc Andreessen has been a Democrat most of his life. However, he’s made the surprising decision to endorse and vote for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
The Reason Behind His Decision
Andreessen’s reasoning is centered around one major issue: he believes Trump’s policies are much more favorable for tech, specifically for the startup ecosystem. In a recent episode of "The Ben & Marc Show," a podcast co-hosted by Andreessen and a16z co-founder Ben Horowitz, they discussed why they’re supporting Trump over President Joe Biden.
A Key Issue: Tech vs. Regulation
Andreessen and Horowitz argued that tech prowess is one of the three pillars – along with economy and military might – that allowed the U.S. to be the most successful country in the world over the last century. They believe that American dominance in these areas helped the U.S. peacefully defeat one of the biggest threats of the twentieth century, the Soviet Union.
The Importance of Tech
Andreessen emphasized the significance of tech in the United States’ success:
"Why is tech important? It’s because if you don’t have the tech part of that triangle, you’re not going to have the economy part, you’re not going to have the military part."
Biden vs. Trump: Which Way to Go?
The co-founders listed several reasons they believe the Biden administration is stifling startups through overregulation and potentially needless taxation:
- Overregulation of AI: Andreessen expressed concerns about the current White House plan to "overregulate" artificial intelligence, which could put limitations on U.S. innovation:
"Any limitations we put [on] ourselves are going to disadvantage the U.S. versus the rest of the World."
- Crypto Regulation: Horowitz discussed Trump’s crypto regulation plan, which is seen as a "flat-out blanket endorsement" of the entire space. In contrast, the Biden administration has proposed regulations that some argue could harm innovation:
"[Trump] said to us is, ‘[AI] is very scary, but we absolutely have to win because if we don’t win, China wins.’"
- Taxation: Andreessen mentioned that Trump’s plan for crypto regulation is more favorable than Biden’s proposal to tax unrealized capital gains:
"This makes startups completely implausible."
The Final Straw: Unrealized Capital Gains Tax
Andreessen explained that the unrealized capital gains tax, which would require startups to pay taxes on valuation increases, was the final straw for him. He believes this policy would be disastrous for venture firms and startups:
"If you’re a venture firm, you’re getting strips of your portfolio pulled away from you every year. You’re out of business."
A Shift in Politics: Why Andreessen is Voting for Trump
Andreessen has been vocal about the importance of tech to society in the past. Last October, he published a "Techno-Optimist Manifesto" that called for technologists to ignore critics and pessimists and embrace tech as a force for good.
Given his concerns about Biden’s policies and his faith in Trump’s approach to tech, it’s not surprising that Andreessen is making the switch:
"I’m voting for Donald Trump because I think he understands the importance of tech and innovation."
